1. The short answer

VocaX offers "the content is already made, open it and study". Anki offers "build it into whatever shape you want". It is hard for one product to deliver both in full.

That is not diplomatic hedging. The two solve different problems: one removes the evening before you start, the other hands you full control. Picking the wrong one usually does not get you a worse app — it gets you an ill-fitting one.

2. Setup effort: can you start tonight?

This is where the two differ most.

• With VocaX: pick a word list and start. The daily goal defaults to 50 words and can be adjusted on the progress ring on the card screen. Definitions, examples and audio are attached to each entry, so there is nothing to prepare first.
• With Anki: you need cards first. You either make them or find a shared deck and reshape it to your habits. That step is not wasted — for many people it is precisely what makes the word stick — but it does sit before "start studying".

3. Making your own cards: this is the actual fork

VocaX does not let you create or edit cards. The front of a card (the word) and the back (the definition) are preset. There are no custom templates and no way to import your own material as cards. What you do control is four things: which batch of words to study (the word lists, plus words you have studied, favourites, search history and flagged items), which practice format, how many a day, and which theme to use.

Anki is the reverse: you decide the fields, what appears on the front, how cloze deletions work and where images come from, and you can tear it all down later without asking anyone. Material that belongs to no word list — lecture slides, papers, contract clauses — can simply become a card you typed.

4. Practice formats: three separate skills, and who schedules review

VocaX splits something that is usually blended into three practice formats. Each keeps its own rhythm and the app schedules the reviews:

• Translation: see the word, pick the definition. The fastest one, and the easiest way to feel you "know" a word you can neither spell nor say.
• Dictation: hear the word, type the letters. It tests whether you can spell it.
• Speaking: say it into the microphone, and on-device transcription shows you what it heard. It judges whether you said the word, not how good your accent is.

5. Pronunciation and context: do you have to gather it yourself?

In VocaX this material is already attached to the word:

• Audio: dictation uses the system voice to read the word aloud; speaking uses on-device speech recognition, so transcription happens on the device.
• Definitions and examples: every entry carries its own definition, example sentences and common collocations.

6. Which devices, and what it costs

7. Boundaries: what VocaX cannot help with

• It is less customisable than Anki. Card content and practice structure are fixed; there are no custom templates and no shared-deck ecosystem. If you have ever fixed a bad card and immediately felt the difference, you will miss that here.
• iPhone, iPad and Mac only. No Android version, no web version, no Windows version. If your study moves between an Android phone and a Windows laptop, VocaX will not follow you.
• Material outside the word lists cannot be added. Lecture slides, specialist papers and similar content need somewhere else to live.
