How to Look Up English You Don't Understand: Point the Camera, Tap the Word

When you come across English you don't know, you don't have to type it. Open Camera Word Capture in VocaX, point the camera at the text, and the words on screen are marked out — tap any one of them to open its entry with the definition and example sentences. Recognition happens on your iPhone, and the image never leaves the device. Save a word you want to keep, and it will come back in your reviews.

It is built for the moment when there is a line of English in front of you and you want one word from it: a menu, a manual, a street sign, an exam paper, a screenshot of subtitles. It is not a scanner that turns a whole page into Chinese — one word at a time, and that boundary is worth stating up front.

1. What Camera Word Capture is

Camera Word Capture is one of the ways to look up a word in VocaX. Take a photo of the English in front of you, or choose a picture you already have in your album, and the app finds the English words in the frame and marks where they are. Tap a word and you open that word's entry.

Compared with typing, what it removes is the step of keying letters into a search box one by one. In a restaurant, at an airport, or during an exam, that step is often the difference between looking a word up and letting it go.

Camera Word Capture does not solve "do I know this word" — it solves "I really don't want to spell it out right now."

2. When it saves you the most time

• Restaurant menus. Dish names and ingredient lists are full of unfamiliar words. Photograph the page and tap the few that matter, instead of looking each one up at the table.
• Product manuals and medicine packaging. The words are unusual and the type is small. Move in close, get those lines sharp, and tap what you don't know for the definition and examples.
• Street signs and airport directions. When you are in a hurry you don't need to copy the whole sentence — tap the one word you don't know.
• Printed exam papers and practice sheets. Check the words you missed against the page itself, and keep the ones you want in your own list.
• Screenshots of subtitles. Save the frame to your album and pick it up from there later, without pausing the player to type.

3. How to shoot so it gets it right the first time

• Get enough light first. Glare and shadow cause most of the trouble. Changing your angle or your light source is usually faster than taking the photo again and again.
• Let it focus. Hold still for a second or two and shoot when the picture is sharp.
• Put the word in the middle of the frame. Text at the edges, or on a curved surface like a cup or a shrink-wrapped box, is more likely to come back wrong.
• Move closer if the type is small. Filling the frame with that one line works better than photographing the whole page.
• In a long sentence, tap the word you know least. When several words are new, clear the one blocking your understanding first — the others can often be guessed from context.

When it gets a word wrong, change your angle, your distance, or your light. Most misses come from those three things, not from the tool.

4. What you can do once you have the word

Read the definition and example sentences. VocaX's main dictionary holds 74,334 words, each with a definition and example sentences, so you see how the word behaves in a real sentence rather than a single Chinese equivalent.

Keep it. Save it from the entry and it joins your own list. If you later get it wrong in practice, VocaX leaves a flag on it so you can come back to it (see how flags work).

Meet it again in review. You don't have to remember when to come back to a word you looked up — it shows up in your reviews based on how your practice goes (see review first or new words first).

An inflected form is fine. The word in the frame may be plural, past tense, or a continuous form; whether it reaches the base word depends on the case (see searching an inflected form).

5. Boundary: when it gets things wrong

• Handwriting and decorative type. Cursive script, display faces, and stylised logos usually come back unreliable.
• Very small or tightly packed type. Ingredient lists on the back of a package, or fine print — move in and photograph only those lines.
• Strong glare and blur. Shrink wrap, glossy paper, and shaky photos all affect the result.
• It is not a whole-document translator. Camera Word Capture handles one word at a time and will not turn a page into Chinese. For a full sentence, use the translation feature (1,000 per day with a subscription).
• Trust what you can actually see. If you think it read the word wrong, type the correct word yourself and look it up again rather than settling for a doubtful result.

6. Who this page is not for

• You need a whole page translated into Chinese. Camera Word Capture does one word at a time; use the translation feature for full sentences.
• Mostly handwritten notes. Results on handwriting are unstable.
• The image is mostly not English. It looks for English words in the frame.
• You are not on iPhone. VocaX is an iOS app.

Frequently asked questions

Does Camera Word Capture use up my quota?

Taking the photo costs nothing extra. Opening a word's definition counts against the free daily lookup allowance (50 per day). If you want full-sentence translation, the allowance with a subscription is 1,000 per day.

What if it reads the word wrong?

There is no way to edit the text by hand. Take the photo again from a different angle, or type the correct word straight into the search box.

Can I do several photos at once?

One at a time. For the next picture, go back into the camera or choose another one from your album.

Is my photo saved or uploaded?

Recognition happens on your device and the image never leaves it. Once recognition is done, the app does not keep that picture in your album for you — save it yourself if you want to keep it.

Can recognised words go straight into a wordbook?

Tapping one opens its entry, where you can save or mark it, and it then follows your learning. There is no way to add every word from a picture in one go.
