How CEFR Levels Work in VocaX: Tagged per Word, Not per Book

In VocaX, the CEFR level is attached to each individual word, not to a whole wordbook. So the same wordbook can contain both A2 and C1 words. Open a tagged word’s detail page and you will see its level: A1–C2 are the standard CEFR bands, followed by VocaX’s own D1/D2/D3 extensions. The level does not schedule your reviews and does not set your daily goal — it simply offers a reference when you judge difficulty or pick what to practice.

What “tagged per word, not per book” means

Wordbooks are sliced by exam scope or curriculum, not by difficulty. An “IELTS Vocabulary” book contains both very basic words and quite advanced ones; a “GRE Vocabulary” book is mostly hard words but still mixes in a handful of easy ones. One label for an entire book would be badly distorted, so VocaX tags every individual word instead.

There is a direct benefit: the same word carries the same level no matter which wordbook it appears in. abandon is the same basic word in a high-school list as it is in an IELTS list — no need to re-judge it.

Finding both A2 and C1 words in one wordbook is not a data problem. It is exactly what per-word tagging produces.

Where you can see the level

The wordbook selection page and settings page offer no CEFR filter: books themselves carry no level label. You pick a book first, then choose by difficulty inside it.

To know whether a word is B1 or B2, open its word detail page. Everywhere else either hides the letters or translates them into plain difficulty words.

Three things you can do with it

1. Decide whether a word is worth learning now. If you are preparing for CET-4 and run into a C1 word, you can skip it for now; if an A2 word is still unfamiliar, that is a gap worth closing. The level gives you a quick basis for the call.

2. Choose today’s practice by level. When you are low on energy and want a warm-up, use “Easy to Learn” to begin from the easier end. When you feel sharp and want a challenge, use “Breakthrough Challenge” to start from the harder end. The four Scenario Library paces do the same thing: pick one and today’s words fall inside that difficulty range.

3. Check yourself against a target level when preparing for an exam. While studying for IELTS or TOEFL, use your target level as a ruler and look at which band most of the words you meet fall into. That tells you roughly whether your current wordbook matches your goal. The exam syllabus and past papers still define the actual scope.

Boundary: what the level cannot do for you

Treat the level like contour lines on a map: they show you the shape of the terrain, but they do not choose your route.

Frequently asked questions

Do words in the same wordbook vary a lot in level?

Yes. Wordbooks are sliced by exam scope, not by difficulty. “IELTS Vocabulary” spans A1 through C2, and “GRE Vocabulary” is mostly C1/C2 with a few basic words mixed in. That is normal.

Why does some word have no level?

A small number of words are not tagged with a level yet. They are left out of difficulty-based selection, but you can study and review them as usual — progress and review timing are unaffected.

Can I practice only words at a certain level?

No. The wordbook selection page and settings page offer no CEFR filter; pick a book first, then choose by difficulty inside it. To adjust the day’s practice by difficulty, use a pace in the Scenario Library, or “Easy to Learn” / “Breakthrough Challenge” in consolidation.

When preparing for IELTS or TOEFL, can I treat VocaX levels as the standard?

Use them as a reference: hold your target level up as a ruler and see which band most of your words fall into. They are not an official exam verdict, so rely on the exam syllabus and past papers for the actual scope.

Does a word’s level change if I switch wordbooks?

No. The level belongs to the word, not to the book. The same word carries the same level in every wordbook.
