Why Some Word Cards Have Images and Others Don't: Illustrations Are Part of the Theme Skin
Not every card carries an illustration, and that has nothing to do with how important the word is. In VocaX, artwork is part of the theme skin: switch to a different skin and the same set of words looks completely different. The artwork gives frequently repeated words a more atmospheric setting so daily review feels less dry. It does not carry meaning — for definitions, the dictionary content is what counts.
Where the artwork comes from: it follows the skin
VocaX offers a set of themes, each with its own illustration style. Whichever skin you enable is the visual your cards take on; switch skins and the same words appear in entirely different artwork. That is also why a word may have artwork under one skin and none under another — it depends on whether this skin's artwork includes that word.
A card without artwork shows that skin's background colour and typography. That too is part of the skin's design — not a loading failure, and not a card missing any content.
Whether a card has artwork depends on whether your current skin includes that word. Change the skin and the same words simply look different.
What image or no image tells you
Nothing — at least nothing about whether the word matters more or less. Artwork is a style choice, not a signal of difficulty or importance:
- It does not mean the word is harder. For difficulty, check the level tag on the word detail page.
- It does not mean the word is more common. For frequency, look at usage and how your wordbook is arranged.
- It does not reflect your progress. The artwork does not change because you have already mastered the word.
A card without artwork is not the app telling you the word is unimportant. It just means this skin has no picture prepared for it.
Artwork and definitions are two different things
Artwork sets the mood; it does not explain meaning. When you meet an unfamiliar word, rely on the definition, example sentences, and pronunciation on the card — every one of the 74,334 words in VocaX's main list comes with a definition, example sentences and pronunciation. To know what a word means, read the definition rather than guessing from the picture.
If you prefer a calmer, less busy review screen, a skin with sparser artwork will suit you better. If you want more visual texture in your daily review, pick a richer one. It is an aesthetic choice and it does not change what you study or when you review.
Boundary: what the artwork cannot do for you
- Not every word has its own illustration. Artwork is supplied as part of each skin and coverage varies by skin. No skin promises a picture for every word.
- Artwork is a style choice and carries no definitional weight. Definitions follow the dictionary content.
- You cannot assign or replace artwork for a single word. To change the look, switch theme skins; the app has no per-word image setting.
- It is not a basis for judging difficulty or importance. Those come from the level tag and your wordbook arrangement respectively.
- VocaX is an iOS app. It is currently available on iPhone only.
Treat the artwork as the decor of your review space: it makes daily repetition a little less dry, while the actual learning still happens in definitions, examples, and review timing.
