Memory resilience (the app labels it Memory Strength) is a state VocaX keeps for every word: the steadier you are with it, the later the next review is scheduled; miss it once and the word is called back sooner. It is not a score and not a ranking. Leave it unpracticed and it drifts down with time; practice it once and it settles again. The one thing you can do with it is see which words are still fragile and which have settled, and spend your limited time on the fragile ones first. It is only a display of a scheduling state — not a judgment on your ability, and not something you can convert into “how much longer you will remember this”.

1. The one-sentence answer: it is each word’s scheduling state

“Resilient” here means one thing only: is this word holding steady right now, or has it gone fragile? A steady word is left alone for longer; a fragile one is brought back sooner.

It is not these three things, and knowing the difference saves a lot of confusion:

• Not a score. It does not climb because you show up often; frequency on its own carries no information.
• Not a ranking. It describes this one word. It does not put you next to anyone else.
• Not an attendance record. It describes where this word stands right now; it does not count the days you showed up.

Memory resilience answers exactly one question: is this word steady right now, or fragile? Steady words come back later; fragile ones come back sooner.

2. When it actually changes

Only one thing brings it back: you actually practiced the word. Recall it and it shifts towards steady; miss it and it shifts towards fragile. The three practice formats — translation, dictation and speaking — each keep their own record, which is why practicing only one format keeps a word in the queue indefinitely.

None of the following will move it:

• Time passing. Leave it for days and it drifts down along the forgetting curve — it never gets steadier on its own; only practice does that.
• Browsing the entry. Opening a word’s detail page, playing the pronunciation, reading a passage — none of it counts.
• Marking it “secure” yourself. That is a note to yourself; it changes no scheduling.

So you will notice something that follows: the longer a word sits untouched, the lower its displayed resilience. It describes how much is retrievable right now, and that figure decays with time; only an actual practice run gives it new evidence.

Time passing makes resilience drift down; only practicing once brings it back up. “This one is due” is still left to the review time to express.

3. What you can do with it

• Pick out the fragile words. The ones showing low resilience are where your time is worth the most right now.
• Confirm which have settled. High-resilience words will not keep showing up in the near term, so you can hand that time to others.

• Decide whether to change practice format. If a word is steady in translation but fragile in dictation, dictation is the side that needs the work.

• No cross-format compensation. Doing well in translation will not pull the dictation line up with it.

Just work through the review order the app gives you, and do not drill the same word yourself; flag the ones you miss and go through them together later. Re-brushing a word the same day does not help — getting it right straight after seeing the answer is recognition, not retrieval.
