How to Spend Your 20 Daily AI Translations: 3 Uses Worth It, 2 That Aren't

1. First, which actions are counted at all

Six features on the free tier are counted by use, and AI translation is one of them. Most of what you do day to day is not counted at all. Get the table straight before deciding how to spend anything.

The insight report row is worth a second look: it is 1 for life, not 1 per year.

What uses no allowance matters just as much: the word lists, all three practice formats (translation, dictation, speaking), pronunciation, illustrations, scenario explanations, and system Spotlight lookup. 2. How the 20 are spent, and how they aren't

AI translation works on a stretch of text: one call counts as one use, and the count resets daily. It runs on its own allowance, separate from AI lookup — AI lookup draws on the 50-a-day line.

The lookup paths are where people get confused, so this needs to be exact:

• System Spotlight lookup does not go through AI and uses no allowance. It reads only the local dictionary built into the app (74,334 entries).
• AI lookup on the in-app search page does go through AI, and draws on the 50-a-day allowance.

These are two different paths. Select a word in the system and look it up, and you spend nothing. Ask the in-app search page what a word means, and you spend from the 50 line, not the 20. That distinction is what decides how your allowance gets divided.

On top of that mechanism, three uses are worth the spend.

• One: a whole sentence you keep stalling on. You have guessed once and still cannot pin down what the sentence is saying overall. Translation does not hand you the answer here; it hands you a hypothesis you can go and test.
• Two: how a phrase behaves. A word entry tells you what the word itself carries, but how a combination works inside a sentence takes the whole sentence. What a word entry holds is set out in what is in a word entry.
• Three: a sentence you wrote yourself. You want to check whether it carries the meaning you intended. This is the use translation replaces least well.

The two uses that are not worth it are just as concrete.

• One: word-by-word glossing. Splitting a sentence into ten words and translating ten times. The word layer is already handled by the word lists and the word entries; spending translation allowance on a job the entries already do puts the spend where a free path already exists.
• Two: using it as a dictionary. If all you want is what a single word means, that belongs to AI lookup (50 a day), or to system Spotlight lookup (zero).

AI translation allowance belongs on judgements about whole sentences. Asking what a single word means is the job of AI lookup (50 a day) or system Spotlight lookup (zero) — using AI translation to ask about one word is spending the expensive line on the cheap job.

3. Limits: what this article does not promise

Going over 20 means going over. There is no hidden allowance, and there is no watch-an-ad-for-more design.

AI translation also does not give you what a word entry gives you: collocations, example sentences, inflected forms. That structured information belongs to the entry, not to translation. Swap the entry for translation and you get a fluent rendering of a sentence plus a word you still do not know how to use.

Keeping the quota hard has a clear cost: some people will find it small. We accept that cost, because the alternative is worse — if allowance could be topped up by watching an ad, by a daily check-in or by sharing, the value of "one AI translation" would blur, and you would lose the ability to tell how much you are actually using.
